Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms

Mental health conditions present differently in each person, but common indicators of anxiety include:

  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Recurring muscle tension
  • Panic attacks

If you recognize several of these signs in yourself or a loved one, an evaluation with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) can clarify whether what you’re experiencing meets diagnostic criteria — and what treatment options may help.

Treatment Approach

Our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners assess individual needs to identify appropriate medications while minimizing adverse effects. SSRIs like Lexapro, Zoloft, and Prozac are typical first-line options; Buspar and Vistaril are available for short-term symptom management. Benzodiazepines are reserved for severe cases due to dependency risks.

Beyond medication, we provide education on coping strategies, self-care techniques, and stress-management tactics. Light cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is offered alongside medication management at our Boulder location and via telehealth.
